“What was the last time you did something for the first time?”
~ Narayan Devanathan, Strategist
Eating fish, except fish sticks, was gross. Until I discovered sushi. Certainly, peer pressure was involved in trying raw fish. My co-workers were not fooled when I pretended to know how to use chopsticks. Everything I ate was delicious. I loved the entire experience.
I am not adventurous. When I am off of work, I will easily go days without seeing the sun. I am stubborn to a fault. My routines account for the entirety of any small amount of my productivity.
So, I use my dependence upon a routine to inject trying new things. There is anxiety around something new, something different. I remind myself that everything I like, I had to try for a first time. Then, I force myself to do something new.
My experience of anxiety is an increased heart rate, a tummy jitter, and restlessness. When I feel excitement, it is an increased heart rate, exhilaration, and restlessness.
How many times have I confused my excitement with anxiety? Is my frame of mind the main difference between those emotions? When was the last time I did something for the first time?
Be curious, be kind, be whole, do good things.
